Sustainability in apparel is often discussed after a product has already been designed—when certifications need to be collected, documentation needs to be prepared, or a sustainability claim needs to be supported.

But by that stage, many of the most important decisions have already been made.

The fibre has been selected. The fabric has been developed. The construction has been defined. The supplier has been chosen. Testing requirements have been established. And changing these decisions later can be expensive, disruptive, or sometimes impossible.

Sustainable product development starts much earlier.

It begins at the product-development stage, where material choices, fibre composition, durability, testing, compliance, resource consumption and traceability can be considered together.

A garment’s sustainability profile is strongly influenced by what it is made from.

In reality, it can influence many aspects of product development.

The chosen composition may affect fabric performance, testing, care requirements, durability and the availability of suitable certified materials. It can also influence traceability and the evidence required to support sustainability-related claims.

This is why fibre composition should be considered alongside the intended use of the product—not as an isolated specification.

A sustainable product should not simply contain a preferred fibre. The overall product needs to perform as expected, meet applicable requirements and have reliable information behind its claims.

Design for Durability

One of the most practical sustainability questions is also one of the simplest:

How long will the product remain useful?

A garment that performs well and remains wearable for longer can reduce the need for frequent replacement. Durability therefore deserves attention during product development rather than being treated solely as a quality-control issue at the end of production.

Fabric selection, construction, stitching, finishing and product use can all influence durability.

Testing can help identify weaknesses before production, but the greatest opportunity comes when durability is considered while the product is still being designed.

This is where technical and sustainability thinking come together.

The objective is not simply to pass a durability test. It is to understand what the product needs to withstand in real use and design accordingly.

Compliance Should Not Be an Afterthought

Sustainability and compliance requirements are becoming increasingly connected to product development.

A material decision can introduce certification requirements. A fibre claim may require specific documentation. A product may need particular testing to demonstrate safety or performance. Different markets and customers may also have their own requirements.

When these requirements are discovered late, teams may face delays, additional testing, material changes or unexpected costs.

Integrating requirements earlier allows businesses to identify potential issues before they become expensive problems.

This is particularly important in complex supply chains, where information must move between brands, buying houses, suppliers, factories, laboratories and other stakeholders.

Connect Product Development With the Supply Chain

A product does not exist in isolation.

Behind every garment is a network of materials, suppliers, processes, laboratories, certifications, documents and people.

That means sustainable product development should also consider whether the selected materials and requirements can actually be supported by the supply chain.

Can the supplier provide the required material consistently?

Can the sustainability claim be properly documented?

Is the relevant certification available and valid?

Can the required testing be completed?

Can material information be traced through the supply chain?

Can the product be produced efficiently without creating unnecessary waste or resource consumption?

These questions become much easier to manage when they are considered before development decisions are locked in.

From Sustainability Claims to Better Products

There is a growing temptation to approach sustainability through claims:

Recycled. Organic. Responsible. Sustainable.

But a label or claim alone does not make a product sustainable.

The stronger approach is to understand the product itself.

What materials are being used?

Why were they selected?

How durable is the product?

What resources are required?

What certifications support the claims?

Can the information be traced?

Does the product meet the required technical and regulatory standards?

And can the entire supply chain support those decisions reliably?

This is the difference between adding sustainability to a product and developing a product with sustainability in mind from the beginning.

Better Decisions Begin Earlier

Many problems that appear later in the apparel supply chain originate from decisions made much earlier.

A testing failure may begin with an unsuitable material.

A certification problem may begin with poor information at sourcing.

A compliance issue may begin with a requirement that was never considered during development.

A sustainability challenge may begin with a product specification that was difficult to trace or support.

Looking at these issues only when they occur means reacting to problems.

Looking at them during product development creates the opportunity to prevent them.

That is why sustainable product development requires more than sustainability knowledge alone. It requires an understanding of materials, technical requirements, testing, suppliers, compliance, traceability and the wider supply chain.

Building Sustainability Into the Development Process

A practical sustainable product-development approach can begin with a few fundamental questions:

  • What is the product intended for?
  • Which fibre and material options are appropriate?
  • What level of durability is required?
  • Which sustainability requirements apply?
  • What certifications or supporting documentation may be needed?
  • What testing and compliance requirements should be considered?
  • Can the selected material be reliably sourced?
  • Can its information be traced through the supply chain?
  • Are there opportunities to reduce resource consumption or waste?
  • Can the product’s sustainability information be maintained from development through production?

These questions do not need to make product development more complicated.

The goal is the opposite.

The goal is to make better decisions earlier, when changes are still possible and the cost of getting them right is lower.

The Future of Apparel Is Designed, Not Just Manufactured

The next generation of sustainable apparel will not be created simply by changing materials or collecting more certificates.

It will come from better decisions made throughout the product lifecycle.

Material selection, fibre composition, durability, testing, compliance, certification, traceability and supply-chain capability need to be connected rather than managed as separate activities.

For brands and suppliers, this means sustainability can become part of product strategy—not simply another requirement to satisfy.
